About Us
What is Daybreak?
Daybreak is a non-profit charitable organization whose purpose is to provide a long-term affordable housing option with a caring environment for single low-income adults in the central Ottawa area.
Residents of our homes can rely on advice and support from Daybreak staff
What type of housing do we provide?
Daybreak tenants have their own private furnished rooms under lock and key. They live in a community environment of five to nine men or eight to twelve women, sharing common areas such as living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and laundry facilities.
Where are the houses located?
Daybreak has a total of five homes in the central Ottawa area. With a total of 47 units, two of the homes are for women and three are for men. All the buildings fit in well with their surrounding neighborhoods and the homes are very much a part of the local community.
What is the cost of the rent?
Rent is geared to income.
Do tenants buy their own food?
NO. Each home has a community house budget, with each tenant contributing to it. The budget covers the costs of food, phones (with call-answer capability), cable TV, newspapers and cleaning supplies. All tenants cook for themselves.
Is there staff?
Yes
But there is no on-site supervision. However, Daybreak staff do assist residents in the operation of their homes and the Daybreak office provides 24/7 crisis intervention support.

What does Daybreak expect of the tenants?
Importantly, all Daybreak homes are drug and alcohol free.
Should individual tenants (or their guests) bring drugs or alcohol into the homes or return to homes under the influence of drugs or alcohol, their residency eligibility will be put at risk.
Also, residents are not allowed to have overnight partners.
All tenants are expected to:- Keep their rooms and shared living areas clean and tidy..
- Attend house meetings as scheduled.
- Prepare nutritious meals for themselves.
- Establish appropriate clinical community support structures before moving in or be working towards doing so at the time of making an application for residency.
- Engage in activities outside of the home.
- Manage their personal medications and keep these in their own rooms.
In short, Daybreak residents are expected to be willing to get back on their own feet, participate in group and outside activities and behave in ways that help their own personal well being.
What can the tenant expect from Daybreak staff?
Daybreak staff welcomes the tenants to call during office hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday) if they need assistance.
Daybreak staff is committed to assisting tenants in:- Finding alternative options of "wellness" support when that is required.
- Advocating for support needs such as social assistance and legal aid.
- Contacting support workers
- Following up with referrals.
- Facilitating mediation in incidents of tenant-to-tenant conflict.
